Beginning July 20, 2024, Canvas will have an updated interface for assigning assignments, quizzes, and graded discussions, featuring a new Assign To button and tray. The Assign To feature allows instructors to differentiate assignments for individual students and sections.
This feature already existed in Assignments, Quizzes, and graded discussions, but the UI has changed. The Assign To feature has also been extended to Pages, Modules, and Ungraded Discussions, allowing users to deploy content to specific individuals and sections. Read on to learn more about using the Assign To feature.
Assign To feature in Assignments, Quizzes, and Graded Discussions
Creating an Assignment, Quiz, or Graded Discussion
After creating a new assignment, quiz, or graded discussion, click on Manage Assign To to assign the assignment to students.
From the Assign To tray, set the due date (1) and the availability dates (2, 3) of the assignment.
You can assign the assignment to everyone, individual students, or sections. The student name and SIS ID, when available, will appear.
Once you have made your changes, click Apply (4) at the bottom of the Assign To tray.
Your changes will be pending (1) until the assignment, quiz, or graded discussion is saved (2).
Please note: Students must have the assignment assigned to them to be able to see it in their Canvas course.
Managing Due Dates and Differentiating an Assignment, Quiz, or Graded Discussion
The Assign To button appears at the top of each assignment, quiz, and graded discussion and offers easy access to the Assign To tray. To manage an assignment’s availability or due dates, click the Assign To button.
The tray will appear, where you can either (1) differentiate the assignment by assigning it to individual students or sections, (2) update the assignment’s due dates, or (3) update the assignment’s availability dates. Once you have made your changes, click Save on the Assign To tray.
Assign To feature in Pages, Modules, and Ungraded Discussions
The Assign To feature is also available in Pages, Modules, and Ungraded Discussions, allowing instructors to deploy content to individual users or sections. The Assign To feature in Pages and Ungraded Discussions do not include a due date but rather availability dates. Students who are not assigned a Page, Module, or Ungraded Discussion are unable to see the content.
Please note: when assigning a Module to a student or section, each item under the module will also be assigned to that student or section, overriding any original assignment settings.
Pages- Assign To:
The Assign To (1) button at the top of the page will open the Assign To tray (2), where instructors can assign content to individual students or sections and set availability dates.
Modules- Assign To
The Assign To option from the Module menu (three dots) (1) will open the Assign To tray (2), where instructors can assign the module to individual students or sections.
Please note: when assigning a Module to a student or section, each item under the module will also be assigned to that student or section, overriding any original assignment settings.
Ungraded Discussion-Assign To:
The Assign To button at the top of the Discussion (1) will open the Assign To tray (2), where instructors can assign the discussion to individual students or sections and set availability dates.
