Speakers: Ali Garib and David Messmer
Ali Garib is a lecturer in the Program in Writing and Communication at Rice. Ali is a Ph.D. candidate in the Applied Linguistics and Technology program at Iowa State University. He holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Arizona State University and an M.A. in TESOL and Educational Technology from the University of Manchester. His research spans the areas of innovative teaching and learning, AI-powered teaching, communication education, technology-assisted project-based language learning, and language teacher professional development and practices.
Dave Messmer is the Director of the First-Year Writing Intensive Seminar program and an Associate Teaching Professor. He has been teaching in the FWIS program since its inception in 2011, though he has been teaching at Rice since 2009. He completed his PhD. in the English Department at Rice, and also holds an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Houston.

David Messmer shares examples of assignments that include an optional AI component and the guidelines for incorporating AI into their assignments.
