Issues with Canvas on New Chrome Browser

Chrome and Canvas Issues

Description

Many users have been experiencing pages which fail to load completely in Canvas while using Chrome 96 in Windows 10/11. This has been seen in Gradebook, inbox, pages, assignments, quizzes, and files. It mostly affects teachers, but other roles can also experience the issue.

When a user opens it up any of those tabs, they will still see the Navigation bar on the side, but they will either get a completely white page, or they will only be able to see the page navigation without any content.

Expected Behavior

Canvas should be fully functional within Chrome.

Workarounds

There are a couple of options if you experience this issue.

1) The simplest is to use another browser for the time being until Canvas has resolved this issue. Clearing the cache may help the problem temporarily but the issue will return when you return to Canvas later.

2) You can also rename your Chrome Data File and force Chrome to generate another by following the instructions below. HOWEVER, if you rename this file, you will essentially be resetting your Chrome browser. This means that any saved passwords or saved websites, etc, will be gone (across the browser, not just in Canvas).

  1. Close all your Chrome browsers You may need to make sure this document is saved locally.
  2. Next open up your File Explorer. Most users will have this button on the bottom left hand side of their taskbar. It looks like a folder. If you do not see the
folder, you can make it appear by clicking the Windows button and the E key at the same time.
  3. In the File Explorer Address bar, type in: %localappdata%\google And hit your Enter key. A new window will appear. The top folder will be named “Chrome”.
  4. Right click on the folder and rename it. Rename it to Chrome.Old . From there, you can restart Chrome, sign back in, and Canvas will work normally.
