Google LTI in Canvas

Rice has now added Google into Canvas.

You will see it in a variety of places in your course, including the Rich Content Editor (under the plug icon), external tools in assignments, and the Collaborations tool.

The first time you use this app you will need to log in to your Rice google account and then authorize the link.

This Google App integration has five main points of interoperability that promote great teaching and learning:

  1. Single sign-on: use your Net Id login to sign into Google
  2. Google Drive embedding and linking: easily embed documents from your Google Drive anywhere you use the Rich Content Editor (Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes)
  3. Google Docs as Assignments:
    •  Students can submit Google Docs as Assignments
    •  Teachers can use a Google Doc to give an Assignment, and send a copy of that document to each assigned student
    • Teachers can grade submitted student assignments in Speedgrader by editing or annotating the Google Doc
  4. Google Drive Collaborations: students can use Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides for a Canvas Collaboration
  5. Modules: Teachers can link to a live Google Files in their Canvas Modules

With Assignments in Canvas:

  • Instructors can select Google Assignments as an external tool when they create a new assignment, which enables:
    • File attachment to an assignment so each student gets their own copy to edit and submit.
    • Missed citation checks and possible plagiarism with the originality reports feature.
  • Students can submit Drive files to Canvas assignments, then instructors can grade in SpeedGrader™.
  • Embed Drive files with the Canvas rich text editor.
